THE STORY OF YOUR GRADE I want to
tell you the story of your grade in IT152, the course you took under me this 2nd
Semester, AY 2009-2010. Column A below shows your actual raw score in percent,
which represents the sum of five components. Passing score in any component, as
you already know, is 60%. Converting your raw score to grade using the Excel
function VLOOKUP (using the lookup table below) gives the tentative grades
under Column B. Examining the tentative
grades made me realize that the best performing student in the course will
receive only a grade of 2.0, and six will receive a grade of 4.0 while seven
will receive a grade of 5.0. When
plotted on the Gaussian distribution curve, the tentative grades will result in
a skewed graph whose mean will fall to the left zero standard deviation. I
wanted the graph to approximate the normal distribution, which I achieved by
lowering the passing percentage to 50%.
Converting the resulting raw scores using the function VLOOKUP and the lookup
table below gives the tentative grades under Column C. However, what I uploaded
to the CRS, your final grades, are shown under Column
D. Take note that I upgraded two 4.0 grades to 3.0.
This was to allow one overstaying graduating student to finally graduate. To be fair, the other 4.0 grade has to follow
suit, of course. Two 5.0 grades were
converted to “INC”, and two others were changed to “DRP” as the students
actually dropped the course. I regret to
say that the “INC” cannot be removed, they have to be re-enrolled. Please do
not ask when or how you can remove your “INC”. You have to take the course
again. I only spared you from getting a red mark on your Transcript of Records.
Despite a lowered passing percentage of 50%, your initial grade of 5.0
remained a 5.0. That is all the
concession I can give. May I say in parting that I enjoyed having you in my class, interacting with you, and observing your study and work habits? Actual life performance, however, has low correlation with college performance. The low performers should not despair. Strive to graduate and make your mark in the workplace as an employee or as your own boss running your own business. Whatever your work, uphold always the UP values of honesty, integrity and fear of God. You'll get far if you do. God bless and God speed!
